Here are some of my thoughts on how to plan a vacation, next step is to add the sites and places that I used for preparing for the vacation.
- Find your destination
- Set your date
- If you don't have a date in mind and you are flexible, maybe look at the fare and the place you want to go first then set a date. I typically will look at the destination site to see what event there is around the target fly dates.
- Watch for the airfare special
- I use google.com/flights to look at the flight cost. There is the functionality to alert you when the fare change price. If you like to fly Southwest, southwest pricing will not show on the google site, but flight schedule will. Typically Southwest has sale every Tuesday.
- Once you find the flight and airlines you want to take, check for the best time you want to travel. If you have credit card that give you points or frequent flyer points of an airline, Check your credit card for points used on reward travel vs airline frequent flyer points. For example, using ultimate rewards travel by Chase Sapphire, SNA to DEN is 35K points for round trip. When logged into united.com, it cost 37.5K pts for round trip. Every little bit of saving will help :)
- If you knew the airline you want to take and you don't have their credit card for awhile, it may be helpful to apply for their credit card and you will get bonus pts. However, typically you will need to spend about 3-5K in the first 3 month before getting the points, so you will need to plan early for that.
- Watch for the hotel special
- Find events around your vacation date and place
- Find activities for your travel companion
- Find restaurants you want to be
- Find attractions that is very unique to the local
- Set the idea route.
- Set your plan for going to the airport.
